Scholarly Activities
Alpha Chi chapters are encouraged to participate in activities
that promote scholarship and recognize the aims of the society.
According to Alpha Chi's Constitution, "at least
once a year an open meeting shall be held for the purpose of
presenting a subject relating to scholarship and the advancement
of knowledge." For funding these, see Chapter
Grants.
Other Scholarly Activities:
- Quiz bowl competitions and academic olympics
- Workshops on preparing for standardized exams, completing
tax returns, or choosing a graduate school
- Preparation seminars for job interviews
- Seminars on stress management or communication skills
- Forums for student presentations of scholarly work
- Panel discussions
- Debates
- Speaking in freshman seminar classes on the importance of
scholarship
- Attending plays, operas, musicals
- Organizing a classic film festival
- Book fairs
- Sponsoring a keynote speaker
- Poetry reading
- Field trips to art museums, planetariums, etc.
- Sponsoring campus art exhibits
Service
Projects
To help promote recognition of Alpha Chi on campus and in the
community, chapters are encouraged to engage in service-oriented
projects.
Examples:
- Organizing school supply drives for local elementary schools
- Offering campus orientation (meeting and greeting) for prospective
students visiting campus
- Campus Clean-up days
- Offering free tutoring services
- Offering library orientation to new students
- Reading to Head Start children, or to children in a campus
daycare center
- Offering basic computer training for adults/community members
- Adopting a local high school honor society and hosting its
members for a day on campus
- Participating in the Adopt-a-Highway program
Fund
Raisers
Each chapter is responsible for determining financial needs and
budgets. At times, chapters use fund raisers to raise money for
activities or convention attendance.
Examples:
- Used book drives
- Scholastic book fairs
- Bake sales, bagel sales, pizza sales
- Selling Valentine's Day flowers
- Selling "Finals" snack bags during exams
- Raffling off the school presidents parking spot for
a day (with permission of course)
- Raffling off a credit in the campus bookstore
- Serving as waiters/waitresses for tips at a favorite local
restaurant
- Selling T-shirts
- Hosting a campus talent show and charging admission at the
door
