2010 Super-Regional ConventionMultiple Talents, Multiple Opportunities
Alpha Chi will hold its first "super-regional"
convention March 25-27, 2010, in Little
Rock, Arkansas at the Peabody
Hotel on the Arkansas River. The
goal is to combine the programming scope of a national convention
with smaller breakout events where the seven regions can enjoy
their traditions and celebrate their identities. A detailed packet
of information will be available soon so each chapter can begin
making their plans for this exciting event!
The 2010 convention theme will be "Multiple
Talents, Multiple Opportunities." This phrase alludes to
Alpha Chi's broad academic base, to the society's goal of "making
scholarship effective for good," and to the four topics
or concepts we plan to highlight in relation to our convention
city. Taken together, these topics and the service projects we
will promote for all of 2009-10 constitute a theme of social
responsibility. Here are the topics and the ways we plan to feature
them:
Civil Rights History
Little Rock was at the center of school integration efforts that
were pivotal in the civil rights movement in the 1950s. We hope
to have a speaker for a Friday morning general session who can
put the events of 1957 Central High crisis into perspective.
During free time on Friday afternoon, delegates may visit the
Little Rock Central
High School National Historic Site Visitor Center adjacent
to Central High to learn more about that historic period.
The Clinton Presidency
Little Rock's primary tourist attraction is the Clinton
Presidential Center with its museum chronicling the former
Arkansas governor's eight years in office. Region III is sponsoring
a panel discussion at 5 p.m. Friday in the center's Great Hall,
with participants to be announced. Carol Rasco, a former Clinton
official, has agreed to put the program together. Following the
presentation, Alpha Chi delegates will be admitted to the museum
for a special after-hours visit.
Reading/Literacy
The success of our service project this year in Indianapolis
leads us to continue Alpha Chi's identification with this crucial
element in education. Ms. Rasco is now president of the nonprofit
organization Reading Is Fundamental,
and we hope to connect our book-donation effort to a program
in Little Rock with RIF ties. We will aim at having a representative
group make a presentation visit of donated books, as we did in
Indianapolis, with a follow-up presentation to the full convention
at the closing general session on Saturday. Ms. Rasco will address
the convention on Saturday morning.
Hunger/Poverty
Heifer International
is a charity based in Little Rock that focuses on combating worldwide
hunger and poverty. Its headquarters and a new interactive educational
museum (free admission) are adjacent to the Presidential Center.
As another option for a chapter service project, we will encourage
chapters' contributions to a Heifer project to provide livestock
or other needs in numerous countries.
These emphases will allow us to explore
the nature of social problems and the ways that responsible citizens
have worked and can continue to work to solve them through political
involvement, social activism, and volunteerism.
