Pryor Graduate Fellowships

Alpha Chi will award up to two Pryor Fellowships, typically one of $5,000 to a student in a doctoral program who has completed at least two years of graduate or professional study beyond the baccalaureate degree and one of $3,000 to a student for the first or second year of graduate or professional study beyond the baccalaureate degree. This fellowship is named for Dr. Joseph E. Pryor (1918-2006), who served as Alpha Chi's secretary-treasurer and its first executive director.

Pryor Fellows, 2009-2010
Barbra N. Lukunka, Missouri Southern State University, Missouri Iota, $5,000
Renae Marie Nemmers, Waldorf College, Iowa Iota, $3,000

Eligibility
This competition is for graduate student members (that is, members enrolled in a graduate program at an Alpha Chi institution at the time of application) and Active Alumni members no longer attending an Alpha Chi institution. The stipend is to be used for full-time graduate or professional study and will be paid to the recipient upon official notification of his or her enrollment in such a program for the fall 2010 semester. This fellowship may only be received one time per person.

Competition Procedures
Each chapter may nominate only one graduate student member; any Active Alumni Program member may apply independently. Nominations must be submitted through the faculty sponsor of the chapter. Only complete applications will receive consideration. The required application materials differ from those required for the undergraduate scholarship programs above. The postmark deadline for the Pryor competition is February 1, 2010.

Required Application Materials
1) Evidence of outstanding scholarship. This could be in the form of an actual example of written scholarship such as a research paper. It also could be artistic, musical, or other creative work for which other media may substitute for or supplement a written product; however, a written explanation demonstrating a scholarly understanding of the work must also be included. Submit one printed copy, printed on one side only, without covers or binders, and one copy on CD with the applicant's full name and the word "Pryor" written on the disc. Written work must be typed, without grade or comments. If the work represents a cooperative project, both the applicant and the faculty or professional director of the project must specifically delineate the applicant's contribution; if this is not done, the entry will be disqualified.

2) A 300-500 word essay introducing the applicant and sharing his or her academic/professional goals, but not indicating financial need.

3) Two letters of recommendation from employers or professors or other persons qualified to give an evaluation of the applicant's character and academic potential. One of the letters must address the significance and quality of the applicant's submission of evidence of outstanding scholarship. (Have sealed letters mailed to you for inclusion in your application packet.)

4) Two complete official transcripts sealed by registrar: 1) the final undergraduate transcript; and 2) the graduate transcript on which all graduate work has been consolidated.

5) Copy of official results of GRE, LSAT, MCAT or equivalent if such is applicable to your discipline.

6) The completed application form.

-- Applicants who are not current graduate students at an Alpha Chi institution must have current Active Alumni status at the time of application. If you have a question, please call the national office at 800-477-4225.

-- Applicants who are current graduate students at an Alpha Chi institution must submit the application through the chapter sponsor. A chapter may submit only one such application. Contact your chapter sponsor to see if you may become your chapter's Pryor applicant.

-- No additional materials will be accepted.
