Biology Seminar Series

Welcome to Biology Seminar,
more than just a seminar series...!

Biology Seminar is the capstone course for the BIOL and BCMB degrees offered by the Department of Biology. The objectives of this course are multi-fold. We strive to inform students of the rapidly changing knowledge base in the field of biology and challenge them to engage in science so that it becomes an integral part of how they examine the natural world and discover truths about it.

We do this in a variety of ways:

  • Exposure to presentations by the departmental faculty and invited speakers relating scholarly research from diverse fields of biology

  • Bio-Bits: short presentations relating a recent discovery or noteworthy journal article

  • Journal Clubs: small group discussions covering such topics as 'How to glean information from journal articles' and 'Proper seminar presentation mechanics'

  • The MFAT: An assessment exam which gives each student a measurement of their factual knowledge, their ability to analyze and solve problems, understand relationships and interpret material from their major field of study (biology or biochemistry and molecular biology). This enables them to evaluate their performance with students at similar institutions nationwide.

  • Senior student presentations
