Journal Club

Journal Club is organized into three phases through which students advance during their three semesters of Biology 440.

Students are scored on participation and involvement and will receive a grade of either 'S' (satisfactory) or 'U' (unsatisfactory). Each earned 'U' will reflect as a penalty of 5 points off the student's final Seminar grade as detailed under the Grading Policy.

The goal of Journal Club is to increase student’s awareness and understanding of the scientific literature and develop presentation skills in a small group setting.

Topics covered include:

searching for and interpreting primary literature
use of data to evaluate hypotheses
scientific style
data presentation

Phase 1: Rm 153 (Goy & Goy)	Emphasis will be on understanding journal article structure, and various approaches to reading scientific literature to critically evaluate the hypothesis, data and conclusions presented by the author. This phase is for students new to senior biology seminar.
Phase 2: Rm 168 (Plummer)	Students will take the initial steps in preparing their senior presentation, beginning with selecting a seminar topic. Each student's topic will be evaluated by the group and suggestions made with regard to article choices, content of the presentation, background info needed, etc. The Seminar Presentation Resources available at the course web site and the seminar Evaluation Form will be discussed. This phase is for students who will present their senior seminar next semester (Fall '09).
Phase 2.5: Rm 152 / Mac Lab (Rampey)	This phase is for students who have completed Phase 2 and will choose an advisor and topic this semester, but will not present their seminar until next semester.
Phase 3: Rm 113 (Moore)	A short course in the mechanics of giving your senior seminar. Topics covered will include insights on choosing data to present, proper presentation of data, appropriate slide format, etc. This phase is reserved for students presenting their senior seminar during the current semester.
