Classes That We Offer
Welcome to the Harding University Public Safety Training Web site!
The Public Safety Department provides not only a safe environment for the Harding Community, but also the opportunity for students and others to learn information and skills that may not be readily available elsewhere.
The Department's Training Program provides training which is both beneficial to the individual and to society as a whole. Most of the training results in certifications through various agencies and organizations. These certifications can be very advantageous for students seeking employment following graduation in many career fields.
Below are many of the classes offered by the Public Safety Office. Click on each class to learn more about the course content and other details.
Class dates are provided for scheduled classes. If you are interested in a class, but it is not scheduled or not scheduled on a date you are available, please complete the form and you will be contacted regarding your needs. Class details will be furnished in a timely manner.

HeartSaver First Aid
Basic First Aid Course which teaches students how to properly respond to common medical emergencies such as cuts, burns, fractures, breathing problems, and environmental emergencies. It also includes the Basic CPR Course. This course is certified through the American Heart Association.
Time: 6 Hrs. Cost: FREE*
HeartSaver AED (Basic CPR)
This basic CPR course provides instruction for properly providing CPR to adults, children, and infants. Students will learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and recognize factors that can affect the patient. Choking and stroke emergencies are also covered in this course. This course is certified through the American Heart Association.

Health Care Provider CPR (Advanced)
This advanced CPR course covers all the material in the HeartSaver AED Course, plus the use of additional equipment and other considerations that can affect resuscitation efforts. Care is taken to ensure all students are proficient in all aspects of CPR. This course is certified through the American Heart Association.

Blood-Borne Pathogens
This course informs students of the concerns of Blood-Borne Pathogens as identified by OSHA. Awareness and protective measures are the primary focus of this course.

Fire Safety
Basic Fire Safety is taught in this one-hour course. The class covers: types of fires, fire extinguishers, prevention, and fire response. Participants will conduct a practical exercise to demonstrate proper use of a fire extinguisher at the conclusion.

SHARP
The Sexual Harassment, Assault, & Rape Prevention is a self-defense class designed for women. The first part of the course covers the physiological effects of stress on the body and how it relates to a person’s response to stressful situations. The second part deals with escaping various levels of threatening situations. All responses are based on techniques rather than strength or size of the defender.

SHARP Refresher
This is a thorough review of the SHARP Course. Added to the program is a realistic, but simulated attacks by an ‘aggressor’ wearing a padded RedMan suit. Requires SHARP Certification.

Storm Spotter
This class trains the average person how to identify severe weather and how to report it to the National Weather Service. The class also addresses precautions to take during severe weather such as tornadoes and flooding. The information is focused on Arkansas weather, but is the information is useful for all parts of the country.

CERT
This is a basic disaster course in disaster preparedness and recovery. The course focuses on the response of those affected by the incident prior to the arrival of emergency services. Basic fire safety, first aid, search & rescue, hazards, and basic organizational concepts are all topics of this course. The final part of the course is a series of exercises.

HazMat Awareness
This class teaches emergency personnel the identification, hazards, and protective measures to take when hazardous substances are encountered. Students are also taught how to utilize the Emergency Response Guidebook to identify potential hazards and protect the area until emergency units are on the scene.

Disruptive Student Management
For education majors and education professionals, the course focuses on controlling actions of physical violence directed at another student, a teacher, or another staff member. The techniques are very specific to actions of physical violence that teachers commonly encounter and are based on principles of control and/or evasion.

Incident Command System (FEMA ICS 100)
This is the entry course into the Incident Command System used by nearly all local, state, and federal agencies. It defines the specific terms used in emergency response and how they are used to distinguish specific levels of the command system.
