Will my account remain active over school breaks?
(summer, spring break, winter break, etc.) Yes! your account will remain active until you have not been enrolled at Harding for about 6 months (due to graduation, transferring schools, on leave from school, etc.) At that time your account will be disabled. If you decide to return to Harding at a later date, your account will be re-activated.

Can I play games against other computers on campus?
That depends on the game. The following games have been allowed access through the firewall: UT 2004, Xbox Live, Halo PC, WoW & HalfLife 2.

How do I tell between telephone and Ethernet cables?
The end of a telephone cord is about 5/16" wide, while the end of an Ethernet cable is about 7/16" wide. A phone cord has 4 colored wires at the end of it, and an Ethernet cable has 8 colored wires. A phone cord will be too small for the Ethernet jacks (orange jack on the wall), and an Ethernet cable will be too large to fit in your telephone jack.

What does it mean to "authenticate"?
Basically, when you turn on your computer, you have to type in your username and password. Also, each time that you open a web browser, you must type in your username and password to get to an off-campus site. That's all there is to it.

What is the FIREWALL?
The firewall is not really a wall; it's a computer that has special software on it. Any and all information that comes from the Internet (including your e-mail) passes through the firewall. It is Harding's first line of defense against those who might want to hack into Harding's system (or your computer) and disrupt it. The firewall also serves as a filtering service via Websense to prevent inappropriate content from entering Harding's system.

What if I get the WebSense message?
If you get the firewall message and you were not accessing inappropriate material, don't worry about it. Occasionally, you will "hit the firewall" because the site you are trying to reach is located on a server that has inappropriate material on it. We now use Websense for our content blocking service.

Harding uses WebSense Enterprise, version 4.
To report a site to be reviewed (add to or remove from the database) go to: www.websense.com/suggestachange

Another nice feature of WebSense is that the blocking screen that you see specifically tells why the site is being blocked. i.e. what category it falls into.
