Child and Family Sciences
The Child and Family Sciences major prepares you for jobs that are in high demand nationwide because of rapid changes in society which cause stress to individuals from childhood through adulthood. Dietetics

The demand for dietitians is increasing rapidly in response to the expanding needs of health care facilities, corporate wellness programs, influence of the media, and environmental concerns. Involved in clinical practice, research, management of food service systems, food processing, communications, sales and teaching, today's dietitian is typically employed in many different organizations from business and industry to state and federal research laboratories. Family and Consumer Sciences Education

Fashion and Interiors Merchandising
The apparel and textile industry is one of the largest employers in the nation. The field seeks people who have knowledgeof the fast-paced fashion world, and who also possess keen business skills. Expectations of Students

General Expectations
Wilson with classAs a student enrolled in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and Harding University, you are expected to be a Christian example and goodwill ambassador for the Department and the University. Specifically, each student is expected to:

  • Abide by all rules and regulations of Harding University and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Attend all classes and laboratories, to be on time, and to remain in class for the entire time period.
  • Take an active role in the educational process and the preprofessional programs provided by the Department and the University to foster spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth.

Professional Development Programs
Student in classThe Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a variety of programs designed to foster professional development of students and faculty. Attendance at these events is expected of all family and consumer sciences majors. It is important that you participate to the fullest extent possible. These professional development programs give you a competitive edge in the job market. Listed below are the key programs offered by the FCS Department.

  • Coleman Distinguished Family and Consumer Sciences Lecture Series: Students and faculty hear a variety of nationally and internationally known speakers. Subject matter specialities addressed by speakers will alternate; all FCS majors are expected to attend all of these lectures.
  • Field Trips: On-site visits to locations locally, in state, and out of state are critical in several courses.
  • Teleconferences: We have the opportunity throughout the year to tap into many national and international satellite conferences. All FCS majors are invited to attend these conferences.

Field Experience/Internship Guidelines

Small group in a recent conferanceRequirements for three (3) hours of credit include all of the following:

  1. A written proposal for the purpose of obtaining approval of the field experience.
  2. Completion of 225 hours in the approved experience.
  3. Required readings from the approved list for the student's degree program (5 journal articles, and 3 chapters from books).
  4. Signed affidavits of hours completed and a completed evaluation form from the on-site supervisor of the experience.
  5. A detailed log of the experience, submitted to advisor, which includes but is not limited to the following:
    - Description of Activities
    - Techniques Utilized
    - Goals Accomplished
    - Learning Outcomes
