Welcome to Harding
Welcome to Harding! Many Information Technology (IT) resources are available to your student. This guide was created to to give you an idea of the electronic resources that are available and how your son or daughter may use them.
Before Your Student Comes . . .
We have recommendations to make your student's use of technology at Harding easier and more productive.
Computer
What kind of computer should they have and what accessories would be helpful.
Software
What software is required and what will be easiest to use on campus
Telephone
Telephone service is provided in all dorm rooms and apartments. Your student will need to bring their own telephone and the cable to connect. The Office of Residence Life will provide the number for you.
Cable TV
Cable TV is provided in campus housing. A cable will be needed to connect the set to the jack.
DormNet
The DormNet office is responsible for managing the Student Help Desk and will be happy to assist you or your student with your technology needs. Please note that, according to federal law, account information is available only to the student.
Accounts and Email
Accounts
An account is created for each student at admission time. It will be used to access all online information at Harding.
If your student did not receive an e-mail with their Harding username, they should call the Student Help Desk at 501-279-4545 to receive the necessary information. Please note that, due to federal privacy laws, this information can only be given to the student.
Password
Your student can change their password by going to https://password.harding.edu. If the password is forgotten, the Student Help Desk (501-279-4545) can reset it.
E-mail
Your student will have a free email account within the 'harding.edu' domain. Their e-mail address will be username@harding.edu where username is the Harding username you have been assigned.
Harding is in the process of converting to Google Apps for Education to host email and calendars. Your student can log into their e-mail through the Pipeline portal, or, if they have opted-in to the Google Apps email option, can go directly to mail.google.com/a/harding.edu from any internet connection. Each Google account has 2 Gigabytes of mail storage.
Network Access
Pipeline Portal
Harding's portal for students, faculty, and staff is at http://pipeline.harding.edu. It can be used to access personal Harding information - Financial Aid, grades, class schedules and much more. It also has links to other popular sites such as BlackBoard and the Brackett Library.
M: Drive Network Storage
Each student has 1 gigabyte of network storage with their account. This storage is available from any networked computer on campus, so they can save something on their M: Drive in their room and go to a public lab to print it out without using a floppy diskette, jump drive, etc.
Dorm and Apartment Network Access
DormNet is a service provided by Harding's Student Support & Communications department that brings the Internet and the campus network directly to a student's personal computer. Dorm residents have access to the World Wide Web and are able to send and receive e-mail messages in their rooms. DormNet is available in all of the dormitories and the Village and West apartments.
Wireless Access
Wireless access is available in many spots on campus. Most areas provide secured access and guest access. The secured access uses your Harding username and password to authenticate and will give access to a person's M Drive. The guest access does not authenticate, but will allow you to use internet resources.
Internet Games
The following games have been approved to be played over the Internet through Harding's firewall: Unreal Tournament 2004, Xbox Live, Halo PC, World of Warcraft, and Half-Life 2.
Other games may be played on campus on Harding's Intranet, but cannot be played over the Internet outside of the firewall.
Content Filtering
Harding uses the SmartFilter system to filter internet access on campus. Certain types of content are blocked through both wired and wireless connections.
Protecting Your Computer and Your Identity
In these days of internet scams, your student needs to protect their computer and their identity. Requirements and suggestions are here.
Policies
Harding has several policies and suggested practices to help keep your identity and your data secure.
