2008 Summer Course Schedule

PLEASE NOTE: No student is eligible to attend Harding University in Florence who is CURRENTLY on academic, chapel or disciplinary probation on the Searcy campus. Any student who has applied and/or been accepted will AUTOMATICALLY become ineligible if placed on any type of probation up until time to depart. Such individuals will be placed on a waiting list and may go ONLY if there are openings after probation has been removed. In addition, a student must have an overall 2.0 GPA to participate.
Students are required to enroll in a minimum of 12 credits, but may enroll in more than 12 credits.  Students will pay for a minimum of 12 credits.
Italian 100 – Italian for Travelers (2) Mrs. Mona Shackelford

Elements of Italian for students with no background in the language; emphasis is given to oral communication in everyday situations.


Italian 101 – Elementary Italian (4) Mrs. Mona Shackelford

A beginning course designed for students with little or no background in Italian. (Fulfills 4 of 6 hours required in VII. Global Literacy.)

Note: Italian is required of all students participating at HUF.


Humanities 201 – International Studies (1-3) Jacqueline Dillion/Mona Shackelford

Preparation for international experience in living and study in Europe or Australia. Enhancement in cultural sensitivity and practical matters of survival in a different cultural setting. Approximately 30 hours of classroom instruction plus “hands-on” experience in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia. Research on the host country. This course is designed to better prepare students for the international experience of living and study in Europe. (Fulfils 1 to 3 hours of the 6 hours required in VII. Global Literacy.)


Humanities 270–European Civilization & Humanities (2-6) Jacqueline Dillion/ John Keller/Robbie Shackelford

An integration of the disciplines of art, drama, history, literature, music, philosophy, and religion stressing their shared thematic and stylistic qualities within the broad periods of Western civilization. Required of all students participating in the European programs. May substitute for 2-6 hours selected from the following: Art 101, Music 101, English 201 or 202, History 110 or 111, and one course from Mus 311,312, 313, or 314. This course may not be used to raise a grade in any course previously taken.


Bmis 280 - The World Christian (2 or 3) online Tim Westbrook

NOTE: This course may be taken ONLY as a second Bible class.

This introductory missions course focuses on key questions about God, His world, and our mission in order to foster a world Christian mindset and values. This course establishes the foundation for subsequent missions courses. The 3-hour option is recommended for those students taking the course as a Global Literacy requirement.

Art 292 - Painting (3) Dr. John Keller

Creative experiences with oil and acrylic in landscape, portraiture, and other select subjects. Prerequisite: 102 or 103, 260, or consent of instructor.

Art 300 - Watercolor(3)Dr. John Keller

Painting and rendering in water-based media. Prerequisites: Art 102 or 103, 104 and 200, or equivalent accepted by instructor.

Art 104 - Multi-media Drawing and Rendering (3) Dr. John Keller

Drawing in various media. Studio work in drawing and composition problems. Some art background is recommended.

Art 475 - Independent Study (1-3) Dr. John Keller

Supervised individual work in areas of special interest. Concentration is permitted in areas where appropriate prerequisites have been taken.

Biology 111 – General Biology (3) Dr. John Moon (DVD)

A lecture course in selected principles of biology for students not majoring in natural sciences. Topics will be chosen from the following: cellular chemistry, cell structure and function, human structure and function, human genetics, infectious diseases, molecular genetics, and ethical issues related to the discovery and use of modern genetic technology. Satisfies the Liberal Arts requirement in biology, but does not count toward a major or minor in biology.


Biology 250 – Environmental Science (3) Dr. John Moon (DVD)

Biological knowledge of the structure and function of ecosystems; human influence on the environment.
