Author, historian to open Harding Distinguished Lecture Series

David BartonSEARCY – Author and historian David Barton will initiate the 2004-05 American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Barton is the founder and president of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization that distributes historical, legal and statistical information and helps citizens become active in their local schools and communities.

He has done much research from original writings of the Founding Era. He has served as a consultant to state and federal legislators, has participated in several cases at the Supreme Court, and was involved in the development of history/social studies standards for students in Texas and California.

Barton has authored numerous books on historical, legal and educational issues. He speaks at conferences across the nation and appears on numerous television and radio programs.

He has received several national and international awards including several Angel Awards, a Dove Award and Telly Awards for excellence in media and educational medium; Who’s Who in Education; and the George Washington Honor Medal.

Two radio personalities and a statesman round out the 2004-05 American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series. Radio talk show host and film critic Michael Medved will address an audience Oct. 26. Former Congressman J.C. Watts will speak Feb. 24, and radio legend Paul Harvey will conclude the series April 21.

The ASI Distinguished Lecture Series offers insight into current trends in political and economical development affecting the American way of life. Speakers in the Lecture Series have included President George Bush, President Gerald Ford, Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev, Colin Powell, John Major, Lech Walesa, Linda Chavez and Henry Kissinger.

This year’s speakers are sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation. All presentations are free and open to the public. They begin at 7:30 p.m. in Benson Auditorium, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
