Harding University announces 2004-05 Distinguished Lecture Series

SEARCY - Author and historian David Barton will initiate the 2004-05 American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series Sept. 21.

David BartonBarton is the founder and president of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization that distributes historical, legal and statistical information and helps citizens become active in their local schools and communities.

His exhaustive research from original writings of the Founding Era has rendered him an expert in this field. He serves as consultant to state and federal legislators, has participated in several cases at the Supreme Court, and was involved in the development of history/social studies standards for students in Texas and California.

Two radio personalities and a statesman round out the 2004-05 American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series.

Michael MedvedMichael Medved is a film critic, best-selling author, and nationally syndicated radio talk show host who will speak Oct. 26. His daily three-hour program, emphasizing the intersection of politics and pop culture, reaches more than 2 million listeners in more than 100 markets, coast to coast.

After working as a screenwriter in Hollywood, he reviewed movies for CNN and later as chief film critic for the New York Post. His most influential work was a best-selling indictment of the entertainment industry, Hollywood vs. America. His columns on media and society appear regularly in USA Today, where he serves as a member of the board of contributors.

J.C. WattsJ.C. Watts is a community leader whose concerns encompass the globe - from AIDS relief in Africa to hometown issues in his native Oklahoma. He will speak Feb. 24, 2005. During eight years in Congress, he served as chairman of the House Republican Conference and on the House Armed Services Committee. Watts also authored legislation to create the House Select Committee on Homeland Security, on which he later served.

Watts is chairman of J.C. Watts Companies, which provide services in communication, business and public affairs. He co-founded and co-chairs the Coalition for AIDS Relief in Africa and created the J.C. Watts Foundation to focus on urban renewal and other charitable initiatives.

All presentations begin at 7:30 p.m. in Benson Auditorium. They are co-sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation. Tickets are not required, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
