May 5, 2005 Harding names new VP, academic deanSEARCY - Bruce McLarty of Searcy has been named vice president for spiritual life and dean of the College of Bible and Religion, President David Burks announced today.McLarty is the current pulpit minister of College Church of Christ in Searcy. In his new position, effective Aug. 15, he will be responsible for the undergraduate Bible program, Institute for Church & Family, Center for World Missions, Harding School for Biblical Studies, and the Graduate School of Religion in Memphis, Tenn. He will also be the liaison for spring break and international campaigns. Dr. Monte Cox, assistant professor of Bible, has been appointed associate dean. As such, he will coordinate academic affairs for the College of Bible and Religion. He will continue to work with the Center for World Missions, and in his new role will help create a strategic plan for the College of Bible and Religion. "I am extremely pleased that Bruce McLarty will be joining Harding's administrative staff," said Burks. "He is fulfilling a very important role on the campus, and I am confident in his ability to lead the College of Bible and Religion. I think the team of Bruce and Monte Cox will provide outstanding leadership for many years to come." Drs. Tom Alexander and Duane Warden, current dean and associate dean, are returning to full-time classroom duties. McLarty, a 1978 alumnus who holds a bachelor of arts degree in Bible, received a master of theology degree in 1982 from the Harding Graduate School of Religion. He has preached at churches in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi, in addition to serving as a missionary in Kenya. McLarty has written articles for 21st Century Christian Magazine, Upreach Magazine, Image Magazine, The Gospel Advocate, and Church & Family Magazine. His book, Journey of Faith: Walking with Jesus Through the Gospel of John, was published in 1997. He has also written a commentary on the biblical book Philemon for the Truth for Today Commentary Series. The College of Bible and Religion named him "Outstanding Alumnus" in 1999. Cox received the bachelor of arts degree from Harding in 1981, the master of arts degree from the Harding Graduate School of Religion in 1994, and the doctorate in philosophy from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1999. Cox, who spent nearly 10 years as a missionary in Kenya, served as visiting professor of missions before joining the faculty in 1993. Each year he leads students from his "Living World Religions" class to Chicago to engage in conversation with those of other faiths. During the summer he guides students on a tour of Greece and the Mediterranean world in the Honors Abroad Program. Cox received the Distinguished Teacher Award in 1999 and 2005. The vice presidential position was announced Feb. 23, and more than 30 names were recommended to the search committee by the March 30 deadline.
