Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)/Pfizer: Managed Care Summer Internship

The Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy (FMCP) in collaboration with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) is now accepting applications for twelve internship positions for the 2010 AMCP/FMCP/Pfizer Inc Managed Care Pharmacy Summer Internship Program and for two internships positions for the 2010 AMCP/FMCP/Allergan Inc Specialized Summer Internship Program in Health Outcomes. The goal of the programs is to enhance a student pharmacist's knowledge of managed care pharmacy practice principles and health outcomes research by direct hands-on involvement at managed health care systems and health outcomes research experiential sites.
The selection process is competitive. To be eligible for the AMCP/FMCP Summer Internship Programs, students must be enrolled full-time in their second or third professional year at an ACPE accredited school or college of pharmacy during the 2009-2010 academic year, with anticipated graduation in 2011 or 2012 with a PharmD degree. Three letters of reference must be supplied with each application, one from the dean of the school, one from a pharmacist faculty member and one from a non-relative pharmacist. A student may apply for both programs in the same year. Applications must be submitted online and letters of reference with attached application copies must be postmarked by February 1. Applicants must be able to complete the internship during a consecutive 10 week period between May and August. ASHP has a unique summer internship position available for a current pharmacy student. The program will be 10 weeks in duration allowing the student to gain experience in national association management with a focus on the ASHP Pharmacy Technician Initiative (PTI), a major advocacy initiative of ASHP. The goal is of the PTI is to develop an educated, trained, certified, and registered pharmacy technician workforce in every state in order to improve medication use safety and expand access to the patient care services of pharmacists through a partnership between ASHP and its state affiliates. The intern will be an integral member of the PTI team, which includes representatives from various divisions within ASHP including
Government Affairs, Accreditation Services, Public Relations, Affiliate Relations, and led by the Office of Professional Development.
To be eligible to apply, students must be enrolled in a full-time ACPE-accredited doctor of pharmacy program, be in good academic standing, and have an active membership with ASHP. The program is located at our headquarters in Bethesda, MD. ASHP does not provide a stipend or salary. All personal expenses and arrangements (e.g., housing, transportation, etc.) are the responsibility of the intern. The Occupational Health Internship Program is a great opportunity for graduate students to learn about the field of occupational health and safety from the perspective of the worker. Students work in teams to investigate a job-related problem identified by a group of workers. Project work emphasizes worker interviews and worksite tours combined with research. Students can apply for placement in any of the following cities, regardless of where they now reside: New York City, Berkeley/Oakland, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The deadline to apply is April 1. The program is open to graduate students in public health, medicine, pharmacy and nursing. The program is looking for students with experience or interest in working with unions or social justice organizations, are organized and self-starting and ideally can speak a second language of new immigrant workers: Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, etc. A stipend is provided for the 8-week experience ($650/week for graduates). Rite Aid Pharmacy Internships: Drugstore Internships
Once you have entered into the professional program at your school of pharmacy, you are then eligible to enter the Rite Aid Intern program. It is designed to teach you about pharmacy operations and prepare you to manage a pharmacy upon licensure as a pharmacist. The internship begins with comprehensive Computer Based Training (CBT) modules which includes training on our advanced pharmacy computer system (NEXGEN), HIPAA, CIA and Rite Aid policies and procedures. The program is a structured four year, four step training that advances with each year of your internship. The key to being a successful community practice pharmacist is to match your community's needs with your clinical experience to create a pharmacy where patients value the services you provide. This year Walgreens is offering a new opportunity for pharmacy students. Walgreens has created a program where you can learn and practice the application of your knowledge before you graduate. We have created a 12-week program available to all pharmacy students and it is designed to provide varying levels of information based on your year in pharmacy school. Your projects, responsibilities and practical experience will vary dependent upon where you are in your curriculum. You will work on exercises involving: Prescription Medications, Over-the-Counter Products, Herbal Products, Patient Counseling Guidelines, Disease State Information, Pharmacy Laws and Ethics, and Management of the Pharmacy.
This program will be available in our markets nationwide. This program was designed by a team of recent pharmacy graduates to enhance your professional development. Early in school it is important to learn the tasks of the pharmacy technician, but as you progress through your curriculum it is important to have the opportunities to apply your knowledge in a working environment. Wal-Mart pharmacies host hundreds of pharmacy students every year through our internship program. Created to develop skills in both Pharmacy and in Management, it's a great program to prepare you for your own career as a pharmacist. Our Internship program is tailored to the level of education that Pharmacy Students have received.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation created the Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety in 2004. This is the only award program to honor a pharmacist-led multidisciplinary team for its significant institution-wide system improvements relating to medication use. The $50,000 award, which is sponsored by the Cardinal Health Foundation, recognizes on a national level pharmacy professionals who have assumed a leadership role in promoting safety in the medication-use process. The award also honors two finalists, who each receive $10,000. Applications are being accepted through April 29, 2010. More information available here.
Tylenol Scholarship Program: As a company dedicated to helping people feel better, we're proud to support the future of healthcare with our annual TYLENOL® Scholarship program. Now in its 17th year, the program helps students who are pursuing careers in the healthcare, life sciences, or related fields manage the rising costs of education.
This year, we'll be awarding $250,000 in scholarships based on leadership qualities and academic performance, including ten $10,000 and thirty $5,000 grants. Scholarships awarded to students pursuing healthcare-related education at an accredited institution. Ten students will be awarded $10,000 scholarships. Thirty students will receive $5,000 grants. The ASHP Foundation Student Research Award is presented annually to a pharmacy student for a published or an unpublished paper or report of a completed research project related to pharmacy practice in a hospitals and health systems. The Student Research Award consists of a $1,500 honorarium, a $1,000 expense allowance to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, and a plaque. The research should be completed and the paper prepared before June 1 of the year preceding the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting at which the Award is to be presented. More information available here.
The Phi Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has established the Cassandra Taylor Scholarship in Memory of our beloved member Cassandra Taylor. Cassandra was a very dedicated member to Alpha Kappa Alpha and her local chapter. She was a hard working mother, wife, and student. We lost Cassandra in September of 2007 and it is with great admiration that we honor her by establishing this scholarship in her memory for the love and the service that she offered to our great sorority. Cassandra received a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and was pursuing her Doctoral Degree of Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The goal of the Cassandra Taylor Scholarship is to support the development of future leaders in pharmacy and to recognize pharmacy students who are pursuing a career in pharmacy.
Eligibility:
1. The student applicant must be enrolled as a full-time pharmacy student in an accredited U.S. college or school of pharmacy studying to obtain a doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.).
2. Student applicants must have completed at least one professional year of pharmacy school to apply. First year pharmacy students are not eligible to apply.
3. The student applicant must have a minimum of a 2.85 or "C" cumulative grade point average.
Application Process:
Complete application is attached. The application is open for all pharmacy students that have completed at least one year at an accredited College of Pharmacy. To apply, please submit the following:
1. Completed application form. 2. Current resume or curriculum vitae. (Submitted with the application)
3. A cover letter explaining your interest and career goals in community pharmacy practice (submitted with your application). Length should be no more than two typewritten pages. Please communicate and provide specific examples that demonstrate why you are deserving of this scholarship. Address cover letter to "Phi Alpha Omega Scholarship Committee."
4. One letter of recommendation that explains why you are deserving of this scholarship. This letter may be from the staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, district manager, regional manager, or corporate office. The letter may be addressed to: "Phi Alpha Omega Scholarship Committee."
5. A signed letter from a pharmacy faculty member, pharmacy advisor, dean, or transcript office that states the applicant is in good academic standing with at least a "C" grade point average. Please note: The cover letter and resume must be submitted with your application.. The recommendation letter and letter to verify academic standing must be postmarked by July 31st of application year. Rite Aid offers scholarship opportunities available through schools of pharmacy and professional pharmacy organizations such as the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA) and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS). APhA Auxiliary/APhA Foundation Student Pharmacist Scholarship Program: The APhA Foundation, together with the APhA Auxiliary, is celebrating ten years since the establishment of the APhA Auxiliary/APhA Foundation Student Pharmacist Scholarship Program. This scholarship program recognizes students who choose to invest their time in their school's APhA - ASP chapter to help shape the future of the profession while managing the demands of a full-time pharmacy curriculum.
The APhA Auxiliary/APhA Foundation Student Pharmacist Scholarship Program recognizes full-time pharmacy students who help shape the future of their profession by maintaining active involvement in their school's APhA-ASP Chapter. This year, in addition to the nine annual scholarship awards, a tenth scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student leader in honor of Dr. John A. Gans, former APhA Executive Vice President and CEO. Each of the ten scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000. Within this program are named scholarships that acknowledge gifts made to the fund by individuals or groups. More information available here.
The McKesson Foundation has established The Mckesson Pharmacy Scholarship Program to assist pharmacy students who plan to continue their education. Renewable scholarships are offered each year for study at an accredited School of Pharmacy of the student's choice.

Some chain pharmacies have scholarships for pharmacy students. They may stipulate something like this: you work for them part-time while in school, full-time in summers, and for a specified number of years after graduation. It's often a good deal. Contact the pharmacies directly for these scholarship opportunities.
