New Student Information

TO:    NEW FALL 2012 HARDING STUDENTS

FROM:  PATTY BARRETT, DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCE LIFE

We are glad that you have finished your admissions process and have been admitted to Harding University.  Of course, I’m sure you have questions as to when housing assignments will be made and when you will receive information concerning your assignment.  I will try to answer some of your questions concerning housing.

Assignments will not be completed until near the end of July
.  By waiting until then, we can honor the most requests.  Your being happy helps all of us in the long run.

Below is an explanation of the manner in which assignments are made:

  1. Transfers and former students are placed in order by classification and date admitted to the University for transfers and date of deposit for former students.  Assignments are made according to this order.
  2. First-time-in-college (FTIC) students are put in order by admittance date and assigned according to this order.
  3. If two students want to be roommates, they are put in order by the later admittance date.
  4. After individuals are put in order as indicated above, we start assigning with the earliest admittance date, trying to give the desired roommate and residence hall assignment.  If we can’t give both, we check to see which the student said was more important—roommate or residence hall—and make the assignment from that information.
  5. If we have the number of students we anticipate for the fall, we expect to have an overflow of men and women before school starts.  If that happens, the last individuals to be admitted will be assigned temporary housing.  This will be on campus and should only last a short time.

Updates for roommate, suitemates, and residence hall choices will be taken until July 1st
.

We hope to be able to honor requests for roommates and suitemates that are made by July 1st if all individuals involved were accepted by May 31st, although the residence hall will depend on when individuals are admitted and how fast each building fills up.  We will also do our best to honor requests to be roommates made by individuals admitted after May 31st.  We know having the roommate you want is a very important thing, so working that out is a priority to us, as long as we are fair to those admitted to the University earlier.  In order to assign individuals as roommates, we must hear from both of them that they want to be together.  We also try to honor suitemate choices, although it is more difficult to coordinate acceptance dates and dorm choices when four are involved.  Again, we have to hear from all individuals.  (In residence halls without suites, those who ask to be suitemates will be placed in rooms by each other.)

Cathcart, Kendall, Pattie Cobb, Sears, Stephens, Searcy Hall, Pryor and Shores are women’s housing.  In most cases, these residence halls have two rooms sharing a bathroom.  Searcy Hall is an efficiency apartment-style residence hall.  There might be a couple of vacancies for transfers in this facility.  Shores and Pryor Halls are fullsize apartment-style residence halls.  Individuals wishing to live in these facilities must have completed at least 45 hours, although it usually takes more hours than that to secure a place.  There might be a couple of vacancies for transfers in these facilities.

Women's privileged housing will be in some Legacy Park apartments, Harding's newest apartment complex.  These are not available for new students.  Occupants must have already resided in our residence halls and go through an application process.

Allen, Armstrong, Graduate, Harbin, Keller, and Cone Hall are men’s housing. Armstrong, Graduate, and Keller rooms are set up as suites, which are two rooms sharing a bathroom. Harbin and Allen have community baths. Harbin was renovated a few years ago and looks great! Cone Hall, is an efficiency apartment-style residence hall.  There might be a few vacancies for transfers in this facility.

Men's privileged housing will be in some of the Village apartments.  These are not available to new students.  Occupants must have already resided in our residence halls and go through an approval process.

All rooms have some type of blinds on the windows and are air-conditioned.  Kendall, Pattie Cobb, Searcy Hall, Armstrong, and most of Sears,  Stephens, Graduate, and Keller have carpeting in the rooms.  All beds in female residence halls are standard twins, as are those in Allen.  Beds in Cone, Graduate, Armstrong, Harbin, and Keller are extra-long twins. For more information concerning individual dorms, see the individual descriptions in the Residence Halls section.

Most freshmen women will be assigned in Cathcart and Sears, which are all-freshmen residence halls.  There will also be quite a few freshmen women in Kendall.  Most freshmen men will be assigned in Armstrong and Harbin, which are all-freshmen residence halls. There will be a small number in Keller. If a freshman wishes to room with a current Harding student or a transfer, women pairs may live together in Kendall and Stephens, and if there is room, men pairs in Keller and Graduate. These are the only residence halls with both freshmen and upperclassmen.

The first semester of college is a critical one and often sets the tone for a student’s future.  Our freshmen residence halls are equipped with personnel who will help in this transition from high school to college.

If a student has a documented medical disability, which he/she believes requires special residence hall accommodations, he/she must contact Mrs. Teresa McLeod at 501-279-4019 or tmcleod@harding.edu immediately.  Once she is made aware of such a situation, she will let the student know what documentation is required for the request to be considered.  Please be sure to provide her with your phone number and e-mail address.

We are looking forward to having you as a student this year.  If my office may be of assistance to you, please call toll-free at 1-800-879-4256 or e-mail Mrs. Barrett at barrett@harding.edu for women (501-279-5218) or Mrs. Allen at kallen@harding.edu for men (501-279-4263).
