Scholarships

Mildred L. Bell Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship

Faculty, friends, and family members established this scholarship as a tribute to Dr. Mildred L. Bell, Chairman of the Harding University Home Economics Department from 1959-1984.

To be eligible for the award the applicant must:

  • be a junior or senior majoring in family and consumer sciences.
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.00.
  • be a member and active participant of AAFCS.
  • show evidence of high moral and ethical standards.
  • show evidence of leadership.

Selection is made by the current faculty members of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Harding University. The scholarship is awarded for a one year period. Recipients are eligible to re-apply for the scholarship on an annual basis.

The scholarship funds will be applied toward the university tuition fees for the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Each applicant must submit three letters of recommendation. Each letter of recommendation should include information concerning moral and ethical standards, personality, appearance, and academic ability of the applicant. Persons from whom recommendations would be helpful include teachers, administrators, counselors, ministers, or elders. Ask each person to send the letter of recommendation directly to:

Dale and Joan Coleman Endowed Scholarship Fund for Family and Consumer Sciences

Dale and Joan Coleman established this fund to provide scholarships for students majoring in family and consumer sciences at Harding University.

To be eligible for the award the applicant must:

  • Be a full-time student.
  • Be pursuing a degree in an area of family and consumer sciences.
  • Maintain a satisfactory GPA.
  • Be a member and active participant of the Student Member Section of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).
  • Show evidence of high moral and ethical standards.
  • Show evidence of leadership.
  • Have a good reputation among faculty and staff at Harding University.

Selection is made by the current full-time faculty members of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Harding University.  The scholarship is awarded for a one year period.  Recipients are eligible to re-apply for the scholarship on an annual basis.  Preference is to be given to need-based students and first generation college students.

The scholarship funds will be applied toward university tuition fees, textbooks, and supplies for the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Each applicant must submit three letters of recommendation.  Each letter of recommendation should include information concerning moral and ethical standards, leadership potential, need for the scholarship to complete degree at Harding, and academic ability of the applicant.

Cheryl L. "Cheri" Helms Endowed Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must:

  • Have at least junior standing by credit hours.
  • Be a full-time student majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics, Child Life Specialist, or Child Development.
  • Have financial need to continue their education and to lessen their education loan debts.
  • Must exhibit the attributes of Cheri to use their education in eating disorders treatment or serving children in need of special services with a strong mission to "make a difference in people's lives and show them the love of the Savior."  *See below.
  • Demonstrate scholarship, leadership, diligence and capability.
  • Have a good reputation among faculty and students.

Selection is made by the current faculty members of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Harding University.  The scholarship is awarded for a one year period.  The scholarship funds may be used to pay for tuition, fees, books, and supplies.  If the recipient changes to a major outside the academic areas specified in the agreement between the donor and Harding, the Scholarship will be returned and redistributed to a student in the academic area in which the scholarship originated.

*The agreement states that "this scholarship is not intended for dietetics majors who simply want to work with lifestyle coaching, weight loss clinics or areas not serving children or adolescents in need of special services."
