David Harrison, Children’s Author, Poet to Give Keynote
David Harrison, award-winning children’s author, will kick off Alpha Chi’s national convention with an opening night banquet speech highlighting the convention theme on literacy.
Harrison’s first book for children, The Boy With a Drum, was released in 1969 and eventually sold more than 2 million copies. In 1972 he won national recognition with the Christopher Award for The Book of Giant Stories. Since then he has published 76 titles that have sold more than 15 million copies.
Now residing in Springfield, Mo., and serving as poet laureate at his undergraduate alma mater, Drury University, Harrison has been equally active in educational programs promoting reading and especially poetry for children. His “Sky High on Reading” program was the International Reading Association’s national winner in 2001, and the Missouri Librarian association gave him its 2007 Literacy Award for the body of his work. Among his professional books are such works as Easy Poetry Lesson That Dazzle and Delight, with Bernice Cullinan, and Using the Power of Poetry to Teach Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and More, with Kathy Holderith.
Harrison’s works have been anthologized in more than 100 books, have appeared in dozens of magazines and professional journals, and have been translated into 12 languages and presented in various media.
The Alpha Chi convention, in Indianapolis April 2-4, has the theme “Literacy 500: Making Scholarship Effective for Good,” and will feature a service project of giving Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis at least 500 books brought by delegates to the meeting.
