Lecture Series
Bringing lectures to the Harding campus, this program serves as an integral part of the American Studies Institute. A unique approach to citizenship education in contemporary national and international affairs, the Lecture Series offers insight into current trends in political and economical development affecting the American way of life. Speakers in the Lecture Series have included President George Bush, President Gerald Ford, Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev, John Major, Lech Walesa, Dan Quayle, Lamar Alexander, Dick Cheney, Linda Chavez, Henry Kissinger, Tom Peters, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Bobby Bowden, Gene Stallings, Zig Ziglar, William Bennett, Kenneth Cooper, Fran Tarkenton, William F. Buckley Jr., Robert Bork and Benazir Bhutto.

Dinesh D'Souza
September 23, 2008, 7:30 p.m., Benson Auditorium
Dinesh D’Souza is the Robert and Karen Rishwain Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Investor’s Business Daily has called him one of the “top young public policy-makers in the country.” The New York Times Magazine named him one of America’s most influential conservative thinkers. Before joining the Hoover Institution, D’Souza was the John M. Olin Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. In 1987-88 he served as senior policy analyst at the Reagan White House. From 1985 to 1987, he was managing editor of Policy Review. D’Souza’s books have had a major influence on public opinion and public policy. His latest, What’s So Great About Christianity, was published in 2007. In 2002 he published The New York Times best seller What’s So Great About America. His articles have appeared in virtually every major magazine and newspaper, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair, The New Republic, and National Review. He has appeared on numerous television programs, including the “Today Show,” “Nightline,” “The News Hour,” “O’Reilly Factor,” “Moneyline,” and “Hannity and Colmes.”
Truett Cathy

S. Truett Cathy is founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Chick-fil-A Inc. What began in 1946 as an Atlanta diner called Dwarf Grill is now the second-largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States based on annual sales. Currently, there are more than 1,340 Chick-fil-A locations in 37 states and Washington, D.C.Cathy’s approach is largely driven by personal satisfaction and a sense of obligation to the community and its young people. WinShape Foundation, founded by Truett and Jeanette Cathy in 1984,annually awards 20 to 30 students with scholarships up to $32,000. Through its Leadership Scholarship Program, Chick-fil-A has given more than $22 million in $1,000 scholarships to Chick-fil-A restaurant employees since 1973. All Chick-fil-A Restaurants are closed on Sundays, without exception. When not managing his company, Cathy donates his time to community efforts and teaches a Sunday school class of 13-year-old boys, as he has done for nearly 50 years. Ben Stein

Ben Stein has been an award-winning actor, economist, writer, journalist and teacher. He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia and a law degree from Yale, where he also worked part time as a poverty lawyer and as an activist and demonstrator for civil rights and decent treatment of the poor. He has taught at American University, University of California at Santa Cruz, and Pepperdine and served as speechwriter and lawyer for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. In 1997, his hit quiz show, “Win Ben Stein’s Money,” began. The show has won six Emmy Awards, and Stein has won one for best game show host. He co-wrote the movie “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.” He has written and published 17 books, the latest of which is How to Ruin the United States of America. He writes regularly for E-Online and The American Spectator and over his lifetime has been a columnist for The Wall Street Journal, NewYorkMagazine, Los Angeles Magazine, Barron’s, and many other publications.
