Thundering Herd
The Thundering Herd Marching Band performs at all home football games and selected fall exhibitions and parades. Membership in the Herd is open to wind and percussion musicians from all majors. Auditions for new members begin in the spring prior to entering the university. Marching Band scholarships are awarded based upon the quality of the audition.
The Herd begins each season with an intense three-day camp on campus prior to the start of the fall semester. During the camp, students review marching fundamentals and principles of sound production and begin learning new shows. The drumline meets one day prior to the arrival of the winds for part assignments and specialized rehearsals with the battery instructor.
The typical weekly schedule includes rehearsals from 3:00-5:30 on MWF, a one-hour stadium rehearsal prior to the game on Saturday, and the game performance itself. Extra rehearsals are rarely called.
The Herd is led by elected student leaders and managers who plan devotionals, meals, movie nights and other activities for members.
