Criteria Essay

The applicant will compose a two page "Criteria Essay" which describes (1) the applicant's spiritual background and development, (2) any specific obstacles the applicant is determined to overcome in order to be able to attend college and pursue a ministry vocation (and particularly a youth and family ministry degree from Harding), (3) the applicant's ministry goals and any unique ministry experiences, and (4) the applicant's community or church service and leadership experience.

Here is a brief explanation for each of the areas:

  1. Spiritual background and development:
Describe your spiritual heritage. Who has been instrumental in your faith development? What influence did a youth ministry have in your spiritual development? Describe your conversion (when, who was influential, etc.). Describe the gifts God has given you that will help make you an effective minister.
  2. Specific obstacles you are determined to overcome:
What are the barriers or challenges to your pursuit of youth and family ministry? What obstacles (such as economic, spiritual, social, geographic, etc.) do you face in completing a youth and family ministry degree?
  3. Ministry goals and unique ministry experiences:
Why did you choose Harding University for ministry training? What led you to your decision to pursue ministry as your vocation? Describe any experiences that have helped prepare you for ministry. Where do you hope to be able to serve God? Do you want to minister full time or part time (if part time, what do you hope to be your vocation)?
  4. Community or church service and leadership:
Describe any volunteer work you have done at church or in your community. Describe all teaching or tutoring experiences at church or school. With what groups of people do you specifically enjoy working? Describe any leadership positions you have held in church youth groups or school clubs, etc. What special, creative or challenging activities have you participated in at school, at church or in the community?
