My primary teaching responsibilities in the Biology Department include Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory.  Other specialty courses taught include, Virology, Parasitology, Cell Biology, and Molecular Cell Biology.  I also teach the Introductory Pathology and Infectious Diseases sections of the Clinical Medicine course for the Physician Assistant (PA) program at Harding University. 

My primary research interests are innate immunity and virulence mechanisms of pathogenic organisms.  At Abilene Christian University, I studied the role of calcium binding in endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) toxicity.  My doctoral work at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), involved the study of the induction and activity of bone marrow natural suppressor cells and their ultimate role in innate immunity.  From 1990-1993, I studied the role of macrophages in T cell activation at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

In 2003 and 2004, I was awarded a BRIN Faculty Fellowship and was able to involve HU students in a study of the role of RNAi and apoptosis as elements of innate immunity against viral infection in C. elegans.
