Journal Club

Journal Club is organized into three phases through which students advance during their three semesters of Biology 440.

Students are scored on participation and involvement and will receive a grade of either 'S' (satisfactory) or 'U' (unsatisfactory). Each earned 'U' will reflect as a penalty of 5 points off the student's final Seminar grade as detailed under the Grading Policy.

The goal of Journal Club is to increase student’s awareness and understanding of the scientific literature and develop presentation skills in a small group setting.

Topics covered include:

  • searching for and interpreting primary literature
  • use of data to evaluate hypotheses
  • scientific style
  • data presentation

Phase 1:

The Seminar Presentation Resources available at the course web site and the seminar Evaluation Form will be discussed. This phase is for students who will present their senior seminar next semester (Fall '09).
