National Board Candidates suggested references:

Parks, J. (2004). So, you want to become a national board certified teacher? Weekly Reader Press: New York.

This book is short, brief on details but does have valuable information on the writing styles required on the National Board portfolio. I use portions of this book, specifically the chapter on the writing process required by NPTS, in one of the graduate classes that I teach.

Hopkins, M. (2004). Navigating the National Board Certification process. Corwin Press: California.

The author use case studies in order to teach the NBPTS core propositions which I have found to be of value for the classroom teachers that I work with. A few of the charts are helpful.

Mack-Kirschner, A. (2003). The teacher’s guide to National Board Certification: Unpacking the standards. Heinemann: NH.

The strength of this book is the in-depth study of the NBPTS 5 core propositions. I have used this book in a graduate course that I teach for several years. It does need updating at this point.

Mack-Kirschner, A. (2005). The National Board Certification workbook: How to develop your portfolio and prepare for the assessment exams, 2nd edition. Heinemann: NH.

The strength of this book is the practical aspects of breaking down the National Board Certification process. Again, I have used this book for several years in a graduate course I teach that supports classroom teachers in becoming a NBCT.

Hines, L., Miller, B., & Wright, C. ((2005). A toolkit for success: For National Board candidates, mentors, and all good teachers everywhere, 2nd edition.  Iowa: Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company.

Includes power point presentations to be used by the facilitator. In-depth information regarding writing

Barone, D. (2002). The National Board Certification handbook: Support and stories fr om teachers and candidates. Stenhouse Publishers: Maine.

This book is out of date but is still available. I do not refer to this text nor do I recommend it to candidates.
