Biology 122 General
Botany Fall 2012
An introductory survey of the plant kingdom from prokaryotes to the
flowering plants. Topics discussed include the identification, classification,
life histories, and the importance of plants.
Credit............4 hours.
Texts: Stern Introductory Plant Biology, McGraw
Hill., any edition. Now by Bidlack and Jansky (NOT REQUIRED) or any other botany textbook.

Atlas for the Botany Laboratory, 5th Edition, Morton Publishing Co.,
2008. [You will need this for lab and as a supplement to the lectures.]
Supplies needed: colored pencils, single edged razor blades.
EVALUATION :
To receive an "A" you will need 90% of the total
points possible.
80 % and above will receive a "B"
70 % = "C"
60 % = "D"
Points will be derived from:

Weekly lecture/lab tests during the first hour of lab.
100 pts. each. [The score on your lowest lecture test may be dropped in
calculating final grades -- if you have taken every test.]

150 point comprehensive final -
-
50 point tree test - to be given after the trees foliate.
-
50 point phylum survey test - given during the
penultimate or last week of class.

Lab grades - variable pts.

Class attendance.
≈90 pts. – 2 pts. per class day present
and on time. If you miss class due to an excusable absence you can regain
lost points by fulfilling special assignments. (One week time limit after
absence.)
The professor reserves the right to add bonus points for exceptional class
and lab participation and to add negative points for inappropriate behavior.
ABSENCES: You are paying for
this course -- get what you paid for by attending class regularly.
After three unexcused absences each additional unexcused
absence will result in a warning letter sent to you with a copy to the dean.
Anyone missing more than 6 classes unexcused will be dropped from the class with
a grade of F. (one lab = two classes, 4 tardies=1 absence)
Tests missed due to an officially excused reason need to be
made up within one week or they become a zero.
Missed excused labs must also be made up within a week or
you will receive negative points.
It is your responsibility to arrange makeups of tests and
labs.
Unexcused missed tests will be recorded as a zero.
Missed excused day points can be regained by doing special assignments.
(One week time limit after absence.)
Electronic devices:
All electronic devices such as cell phones, PDA’s, pagers, computers,
calculators, IM devices, MP3 players,
must be turned off and left in your book bag during class and
exams. Non-compliance may result in dismissal from class, a zero on the
exam, and will result in a loss of 2 percentage points on your final grade
for each incident. So, please turn them off and leave them in your
bag. Thanks in advance for this courtesy.
