Biology 250
Environmental
Science
Spring 2012
Biological
knowledge of the structure and function of ecosystems; human influence on the
environment. Daily lectures and/or discussion. (3 hours credit)
Texts: None required. You will
have some reading assignments from the web and other sources. It
will be important to have regular access to the web. If you want
expand your knowledge beyond what is covered in class any of the text books in
Environmental Science are useful references especially those by G. Tyler
Miller.
Grade: Your grade will be determined
by the percentage of points you receive out of the total points possible.
· 90% of those points will earn you an “A”
· 80% points a "B" etc.
Points will be derived from:
1.
Tests (These will be over lecture
material and reading assignments.) Given every three weeks – 100 points each.
2.
Christian worldview "paper"
concerning
environmental issues. 100 pts.
3.
Misc. assignments. -- variable points.
4.
Class attendance. ≈90 pts. – 2 pts. per class day
present and on time. If you miss class due to an excusable
absence you can regain lost points by
fulfilling special assignments. (One week time limit after absence.)
5.
Class/group participation [These are bonus
points at my discretion.]
Note---[ At my discretion I will drop one or more of your
lowest test score when calculating final grades if you have taken every test .]
The professor reserves the right to add negative points for improper
classroom behavior. (Leaving class early without prior approval, studying for
another class, talking out of turn, use of electronic devices are among those things deemed improper.)
Attendance policy: You are paying
for this class -- get your money's worth by being in class and be on time.
Since we have no book attendance is critical. If you know you are going
to be gone because of a school approved event you should let your professor
know prior to missing class. Late submission of assignments result in a 10%
grade reduction per day -- not class day. Since most assignments are
submitted via email they need to be emailed when due.
After three unexcused absences any additional unexcused absence will result
in warning letter with a copy sent to the dean. Anyone missing more than 6
classes unexcused will be dropped from the class with a grade of F.
Tests missed due to an officially excused reason need to be made up within
one week or they become a zero. It is your responsibility to arrange
make-ups. Unexcused missed tests will be recorded as a zero.
Electronic devices:
All electronic devices such as cell phones, PDA’s, pagers, computers,
calculators, IM devices, MP3 players,
must be turned off and left in your book bag during class and
exams. Non-compliance may result in dismissal from class, a zero on the
exam, and will result in a loss of 2 percentage points on your final grade
for each incident. So, please turn them off and leave them in your
bag. Thanks in advance for this courtesy.
