Biology 250

Environmental Science

Fall 2008

Biological knowledge of the structure and function of ecosystems; human influence on the environment. Three lectures and/or discussion groups per week. (3 hours credit)

Texts: None required. You will have some reading assignments from the web and other sources.    If you want further information any of the text books in Environmental Science are useful references especially those by G. Tyler Miller.

Grade: Your grade will be determined by the percentage of points you receive out of the total points possible during the semester

  • 90% of those points will earn you an “A”

  •  80% points a "B" etc.

  • Points will be derived from:

    1. 5 Tests. One every three weeks @ 100-points each.  Wednesday Sept. 10, Oct. 1, Oct. 22, Nov. 12, Dec. 10.    (These will be over lecture material, reports, and reading assignments.)
    2. Final test @100 points. During final week. Date and time depends on the section - see final schedule posted on pipeline.
    3.  Country Report and Presentation -- 50 points
    4. Christian Environmental World View Report -- 50 points
    5.  Class/group participation [These are bonus points at my discretion.]
    6. Note---[ I will drop your lowest test score when calculating final grades.]

The professor reserves the right to add negative points for improper behavior. (Leaving class early without prior approval, talking while someone is making a presentation, studying for another class, and  tardiness are among those things deemed improper.)

Attendance policy: You are paying for this class -- get your money's worth by being in class.  After three unexcused absences your final grade will be reduce 2 percentage points per additional unexcused absence.  You will be dropped from the class if you miss more than 6 days of class unexcused.  Three tardies = one absence. Tests missed due to an excused absence must be made up within one week of your return to classes or you will receive a 0.  It is your responsibility to schedule a test makeup time.

Late submission of assignments result in a 10% grade reduction per day not per class day.
