Membership in Chi Sigma Iota entitles you to wear blue & white cords at graduation to symbolize your involvement in this honors society. Kappa Delta Pi
Kappa Delta Pi is an International Honor Society in Education. It was originally founded 100 years ago to foster scholarship and excellence among those in the teaching profession. At Harding University, the Nu Lambda chapter of Kappa Delta Pi enhances and honors our teaching candidates who maintain an outstanding scholastic record.
Kappa Delta Pi is synonymous with scholarship, service and teaching. The organization provides online resources as well as outstanding publications, including the New Teacher Advocate, which is particularly geared to undergraduate teaching candidates. The mission of Kappa Delta Pi is to sustain an honored community of diverse educators by promoting excellence and advancing scholarship, leadership and service. The vision of Kappa Delta Pi is to help committed educators be leaders in improving education for global citizenship.
The Nu Lambda chapter at Harding University is one of 600 recognized chapters of Kappa Delta Pi. Our chapter inducted about fifty new teaching candidates last fall. Education majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on 60 semester hours are invited to join the local chapter. Listing Kappa Delta Pi on a resume allows a potential administrator to have confidence not only in one's academic ability, but it also connotes that the teacher would possess leadership and service skills.
S.A.L.T. - Scholars Advancing Learning and Teaching
S.A.L.T. is a pre-professional student organization whose mission is to:
1. Provide opportunities for community service in educational areas.
At least one service project per year is organized by the members of S.A.L.T. Students brainstorm possible project ideas and then direct the event themselves; promoting leadership and teamwork among the students. The most recent project was a fundraiser for Africa Reads, a non-profit organization promoting literacy in Rwanda. Students sold t-shirts in the student center with the profits going to pay for the shipping of books to children in Rwanda.
2. Provide opportunities for professional enhancement.
Guest speakers are always an integral part of S.A.L.T. meetings. Teacher candidates are exposed to educators from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience. Past speakers have included principals, area teachers, and consultants from around the nation. A special meeting each spring showcases alumni of the program who have been out teaching for at least a year who return to provide the students with a unique perspective of the field. These speakers share accomplishments, challenges, how the Teacher Education program prepared them for their career and even things they wish they would have known before going out into the field. There is only so much that can be learned just in the classroom; therefore students enjoy hearing about the experiences shared by those who have previously been in their shoes.
3. Establish mentoring relationships within the School of Education.
Because S.A.L.T is open to both lower-classmen and upper-classmen, there is a sense of mentoring and camaraderie that arises between the students. Upper-classmen can provide encouragement to the lower-classmen about rigorous classes, tips for success and just a general attitude of “I know what you’re going through”. Those just entering the program can also refresh the group with their excitement and fresh perspectives.
