National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

NCATE logoThe Harding University Cannon-Clary College of Education is currently accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This accreditation covers both initial teacher preparation programs as well as advanced educator preparation programs; all individual programs are also currently recognized nationally by their respective Specialized Professional Associations (SPAs). We have been continuously accredited through NCATE since our initial visit in 1961.

On July 1, 2013, NCATE and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) merged to form the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP); the new, sole specialized accreditor for educator preparation. The College of Education will be addressing the new CAEP standards in preparation for our upcoming accreditation visit in 2016.

The mission of both NCATE and CAEP is accountability and improvement of educator preparation. The accreditation process establishes rigorous standards for educator preparation programs, holds accredited institutions accountable for providing continuous evidence of meeting these standards, and encourages unaccredited schools to demonstrate the quality of their programs by working for and achieving professional accreditation.

The NCATE standards used in our most recent accreditation visit (2008) include:

Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Dispositions

Standard 2: Assessment System and Unit Evaluation

Standard 3: Field Experiences and Clinical Practice

    Standard 4: Diversity

Standard 5: Faculty Qualifications, Performance, and Development

Standard 6: Unit Governance and Resources

Transparency in Performance

Across the country, teacher education and educator preparation in general are increasingly scrutinized for not providing evidence on the effectiveness in preparing effective educators.  Harding is annually required to provide both federal and national association reports on program completers and currently enrolled candidates. We must provide also descriptions of changes made to programs to our accrediting body. Committed to providing public evidence on the quality of our educator programs, Harding’s Cannon-Clary College of Education has created this section to provide information regarding state licensure exams, GPAs of completers, survey results, and graduation/retention rates. Please note that all files are in PDF format.
