Do you need help with revising or organizing an essay? Studying for a grammar test? Using MLA, Chicago, or APA formats? Do you need to use a computer for a project or writing assignment?
You can find help in The Writing Lab (Room 325, American Studies). Drop in or call 501-279-4627 to reserve time with a tutor.
Writing tutors staff the lab 50-55 hours per week. They will help you review your plans for a paper, review a draft, revise a graded paper, or answer your questions about grammar and style. They have experience working with student writers and have been chosen by the English faculty for this role.
What We Can Do for You
We can spot problems with focus, development, and grammar in your paper and help you to find them as you proofread. We can suggest what you should think about as you correct your paper. We can help you discover areas in your writing skills that need improving, and we can help you improve through computer drills and exercises.
What We Can't Do for You
We can't read your paper and make suggestions without YOUR help. We can't help you improve your writing skills in just ONE or TWO visits. We can't transform a C paper into an A paper. YOU must do that.
The Writing Lab and Harding's Code of Conduct
Tutors follow Harding's Code of Conduct by respecting each student's goals and authorship. Our tutors ask questions and offer suggestions but do not recommend specific words or sentences. The words and ideas writers select must be their own. Our tutors do not "proof-read" papers and are not responsible for ensuring that students pass or receive particular grades on writing assignments. HOWEVER, if you bring us a paper that has already been marked and graded by your professor, we can give you much more specific help in revising the paper and correcting the writing and grammar problems.
What We Promise Never to Do
When you come to us for help, we will never talk down to you or embarrass you or intentionally make you feel uncomfortable about your writing. We want to help you succeed.
