About Sarah-Jane and her Harding experience:
Congratulations to Sarah-Jane Bedwell, R.D., L.D.N., for being chosen as our June Young Alumnus of the Month. She graduated from Harding in 2005 with a family and consumer sciences degree in Dietetics. While at Harding, she ran cross-country and was a cheerleader. She participated in Spring Sing for five years and was a director her junior year. In addition, she participated in social club activities as a member of Zeta Rho and a queen for TNT, took part in a home building Spring Break mission trip to Honduras, and studied at Harding University in Florence, Italy.
She met her husband, Joe Bedwell, while at Harding, and they have been married for eight and a half years.
“I had a great experience at Harding. I made some amazing friends for life at Harding and met my wonderful husband,” she said. “My experience there helped me to grow as a person and in my faith. Traveling on mission trips and while at HUF really shaped the way I see the world and see the bigger picture. All of my experiences at Harding, from sports to Spring Sing to assignments I completed for classes, encouraged my creativity and determination.”
After graduation, Sarah-Jane was accepted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s graduate dietetic internship program in Nashville, Tennessee. When she completed that program, she passed her boards and became a registered dietitian. Sarah-Jane started her first job in a kidney dialysis clinic.
“Seeing people in the end stage of their lives like that made me want to get on the prevention side of nutrition, so I started my own private practice in 2009 and worked part-time as a community outreach dietitian at a local hospital for a couple of years.”
What is she doing now?
Sarah-Jane now serves as a speaker, writer and media spokesperson as well as the official food and nutrition blogger for SELF magazine, a national women’s health and fitness magazine. She has also appeared on the TODAY Show five times since 2012. In 2013, she was presented with the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Media Excellence Award. Her first book, Schedule Me Skinny: Plan to Lose Weight and Keep it Off in Just 30 Minutes a Week, was released January 2014.
We asked Sarah-Jane what advice she would give someone searching for a job, and she said, “My advice to those who are job-searching is to not be afraid to dream big and think out of the box. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job and what type of job you would like best. You never know who might have just the connection you need. Also, use social media strategically to connect with people, companies and publications you might not otherwise be able to meet.”
We are proud to have Sarah-Jane as an alumna, and thank you for representing Harding so well. Congrats, Sarah-Jane Bedwell!
