Interdisciplinary Studies
Students who are members of the Honors College are, through the Interdisciplinary Studies major, able to design their own program of study. Possibilities include unique majors such as Public Health, African Studies, Global Communication or Classics.
The Honors College will fill those voids for students designing their own majors. Dr. Jeffrey Hopper, dean of the College, says, "We'll do all that we can to help students find their academic and professional voices." The Honors College supervises the program under the office of the vice president for Academic Affairs.
The 2009-10 University catalog says this about the Interdisciplinary Studies major:
Honors students who wish to pursue rigorous academic and creative discovery unavailable through traditional majors should consider structuring their own program of study through the Honors College. The special major option (see catalog index) is available to all students. Honors students who wish to make use of this option will form an advisory faculty committee, design a unique course of study, and seek approval from the dean of the Honors College and the vice president of Academic Affairs. Sample degree plans for interdisciplinary studies are available in the Honors House and at the Honors College web site to stimulate students to consider their education from different perspectives.
Students pursuing the major must be a member of the Honors College in good standing (requires a 3.25 GPA). Contact Jeffrey T. Hopper, dean of the Honors College, for more information.
