Livescribe is a smart pen that allows the capture of audio that is synchronized with written text as it is written. It works very much like any pen except it also captures audio as you write. The audio is coordinated with the written text, so by simply clicking on an area in the Livescribe notes, the audio will play what was spoken at the same time the specific notes were written. Purpose:

Livescribe serves as a study tool for students. If you present material that contains complex information and or procedures, then Livescribe is a great tool that will provide students with access to audio coordinated with class notes.

How would this work in the classroom:

There are two primary ways to use the Livescribe pen. One way is for the instructor to assign one student to take notes during class with the Livescribe pen. The pen records the instructors’ voice while the student takes notes. These notes and associated audio can then be uploaded to your Canvas course or other online location.  The second way to use the Livescribe pen is for the instructor to record pencasts which are short tutorials or examples that can be posted and reviewed by students outside of class. Good candidates for this project are instructors that:

◦ Present complex material
◦ Often use a whiteboard or other tool to write examples/explanations
◦ Want to help students learn outside the classroom
◦ Would like to save time
◦ Are willing to share their experiences with the Livescribe pen

If you are selected to participate in the project, you will be given one Livescribe pen and a notebook. You will also receive support from The Center for Learning with Technology to help get the most benefit from the pen and this project.
