IV. Essay
The third section will be to write one complete essay on one of the following.  You will have a choice of three questions. You choose one.
1. Discuss the transfer of power from the Merovingians to the Carolingians.   What were the deficiencies and strengths of both?  Be sure to include all key players and events in your discussion.

2. Discuss the philosophy and development of the Carolingian Renaissance. Include the major figures, achievements and approaches to learning.

3. Compare the career and accomplishments of Charlemagne and Alfred the Great.  Include military, administration and cultural aspects.

4. Discuss the rise and reign of Charlemagne.  How did he achieve power?  How did he maintain it?  Was his system successful long term?  What problems did it cause?

5. Discuss the attacks of the Ninth century.  Who were the invaders?  What helped cause the attacks?  What were the responses?  Long-term results?

6. Discuss the development of Manorialism in the High Middle Ages.  What were the major causes of this development?  What were the primary divisions of the system and their sources?  What developments occurred in technology?
