Essay.  You will have to answer two essays on the final.   They will be divided into two blocks.  You will choose one from "Block A" and one from "Block B".
1. Given what you have learned this semester,  explain and illustrate the values which are the most crucial to Chinese and Japanese society.  You should include at least 3 values (5 for an "A" answer)  for each society.  Each value must be justified and illustrated with specific examples  and the time period of each example should be identified.

2. Compare and Contrast the social values of  Asian societies and European ones.  Demonstrate how theses societies clashed in their first encounters and in the 19th century.  Use specific incidents to illustrate the differences in perspectives and how this led to conflict. Consider politics, religion and social ideas.

3. Discuss the origins, importance and relevance of the Mandate of Heaven  in Chinese history.  Demonstrate how this idea relates to the rise and fall of specific dynasties. Include at least four cases. 

4. Compare and Contrast the responses of Japan and China to Westerners in the 19th Century.  What possible approaches were there? What policies did each country pursue and why? What long-term results came from these policies? 

5. Compare and Contrast the social and political systems of Tokugawa Japan and Japan under the Meiji Restoration.  What values changed?  Which ideas did not?  How did the social system change?  What problems still existed?

6. Discuss the causes, progression and results of the Opium War.  Why did this conflict erupt?  How did it change life in China?  In Japan?  What Treaty ended this war and what were its provisions?

7.  Discuss the rise of  feudalism in Japan.  Explain how the economic (land) system worked as well as the system of  the shogun's government.  How did the government change over time?  What problems were there with the shogun system? 

8. Discuss the rise, fall  and impact of the Mongols.  Who are these people  and how did they rise to power?  How did they affect life in China?  In Central Asia? In Japan?   How did their empire come to an end?

9. Compare and contrast the approaches, responses and results of the Christian missionary efforts into Japan and China. What problems were encountered?  How were they overcome?  

10. Discuss the purpose and results of the Boxer Rebellion.  What circumstances in China led to this rebellion? Include the major elements of the Rebellion, those involved, events and the outcome of the Rebellion.  What long -term impact did this have on China and her relations with the West?
