December Faculty Favorite Chosen by Dr. David Burks

University president Dr. David Burks selected this month's faculty favorite, The Shack by William P. Young.  Citing its fresh perspective on the relationship between the Father, Holy Spirit, and the Son, Burks also noted that The Shack encouraged readers to examine their own relationship with God in the midst of unspeakable pain. The READ(c) poster features Burks in front of the lights that decorate the front lawn of the Harding campus each Christmas season. As always, READ(c) posters may be purchased by visiting the library circulation desk.

Collaborative Purchase Results in Increased Resources

The library is pleased to announce the recent addition of JSTOR's Arts & Sciences III Collection.  The collaborative purchase was shared by Brackett Library and the Colleges and Arts and Humanities, Bible and Religion, and Communication Sciences and Disorders and resulted in online access to the full text of 150 academic journals.  When asked about the importance of the purchase, Dr. Dennis Organ, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, stated, "The wide range of fields encompassed by this set of academic journals -- and of course the convenience of full-text access online -- will make the collection especially valuable to our programs in the humanities.  Faculty and students in art, music, literature, religion, drama, and languages will find new research materials available in these archives and the new issues the journals will continue to purchase."

To learn about using JSTOR, please view this tutorial.  To view a list of journal titles included in the purchase, please visit the Arts & SciencesIII title list on the JSTOR website.  Additional training materials and information about JSTOR are also available on the organization's home page.

New, online reference books

Brackett Library is now offering a collection of reference e-books.  The current collections include works from two publishers: Gale Virtual Reference Library and Oxford Reference Online.  These collections include information in the fields of business and marketing, education, history, law, literature, medicine, science, art, theater, and social work.  These collections are available through the  Library Services page.

Additionally, the library has partnered with Career Services to purchase access to Directory of American Firms Operating Overseas and Directory of Foreign Firms Operating in the United States.  These titles are also also available through the Library Services page.

Don't Be Spooked by the Library

On Friday, October 31st, Brackett Library hosted Don't Be Spooked by the Library, a come-and-go poster session to help students become familiar with basic library procedures such as finding books, finding articles, and accessing course reserves.  A video used to promote the event can be viewed on YouTube.

November Faculty Favorite Selected

Through a IS&T Department drawing, student Ben Wimberly was granted the honor of choosing the Faculty Favorite selection for the month of October.  Wimberly chose Wilson Rawls' classic novel Where the Red Fern Grows.  Wimberly's READ (tm) poster will be featured on the library home page and in the library throughout the month of November.
