Special Topics Class
Spring 2009: Conflict Management
Meeting Dates:
Weekend 1, January
23-24; Weekend 2, February 20-21; Weekend 3, March 20-21
Meeting Times: Fridays 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; Saturdays 8:30 a.m. -
4:30 p.m.

Effective conflict
management and relationship strategies apply to a variety of situations;
including the workplace, workgroups, organizations, families, friends, and
relationships.
This course addresses
conflict situations and provides a foundation and understanding for managing
relationships and conflict. Discussions include the motivators of conflict
and management techniques. Specific topics of study include; the nature of
conflict, the structure and balance of power, personal goals and issues,
styles and tactics used in conflict, how to assess and negotiate in
conflict, moderating conflict, and preventing destructive conflict.
Students will complete the
Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument to better understand their own
personal conflict preferences. Students will also complete the Myers-Briggs
Personality Type Indicator and will apply personality type to a variety of
conflict and communications settings.
Remember, this course is definitely "hands-on." There will be open forum
discussions, critiquing, and opining.

Because bus-650 meets for only 3 weekends,
the first weekend must be productive in order to cover the required
materials. Please read the syllabus.
