Women’s conference to focus on finding truth in TV-saturated world

SEARCY, Ark. — Harding University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program and Counseling Center will sponsor the 14th annual Women in God’s Service (WINGS) conference Feb. 22-23 at College Church of Christ in Searcy.

The WINGS conference encourages women of all ages from all over the region to come together and study topics both timely and helpful to Christians. This year’s conference, “What’s Real? Finding Truth in a Reality Show World,” plays off of various television shows, making creative spiritual applications.

The program features two keynote speakers and a variety of breakout sessions. In addition to classes and worship, a fashion show luncheon and group panel discussion highlight the weekend workshop, which begins Friday night and concludes Saturday afternoon.

Three session tracks, each with three classes, will be offered. Attendees may mix and match from among nine classes.

The “Mythbusters” track will focus on spiritual deception and offer fresh views on reality with classes like “Super Nanny,” a four-mother panel, and “Trading Spaces,” a candid glimpse into the search for the perfect church.

The “Survivor” track will deal with conquering life’s tough times. Classes will cover helping the spiritually struggling in “Intervention,” turning over a new leaf in “Starting Over,” and persevering through physical and mental trials in “Amazing Race.”

The last track, “The Ultimate Makeover,” will feature spiritual perspectives on modesty and beauty. Classes titled “What Not to Wear” and “How to Look Good Naked” will feature panel discussions, report on men’s thoughts on modesty, and share women’s struggles with appearance.

The Saturday luncheon will feature “America’s Next Top Model,” a tongue-in-cheek perspective on modern fashion. The conference will conclude with “A Moment of Truth,” a group panel session on practical suggestions for spiritual disciplines.

“This conference is designed to encourage and enrich Christian women’s lives,” said Sherry Pollard, WINGS committee chairwoman. “It’s a time for textual and topical discussion, fellowship, and worship among Christian sisters.”

Cost is $15 per person and includes all handouts, refreshments and luncheon. Female Harding students may attend the conference free of charge unless they are taking it for one hour of Bible and Religion credit. Students earning credit should sign up in the Registrar’s Office. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

Up to six continuing education units (CEUs) are available in the areas of social work, counseling and mental health for $15. For more information regarding CEUs and scholarships or to register, contact Paula Vines at (501) 279-4347.

Registration may also be completed online at www.harding.edu/Wings/registration.html through Feb. 21.
