Harding faculty receive Teacher Achievement honors
SEARCY, Ark.⎯Eight faculty members at Harding University received
Teacher Achievement awards during the annual faculty and staff dinner
April 24.
Dr. Michael Claxton, assistant professor of English; Dr. Allen
Frazier, associate professor of business; Karen Kelley, assistant
professor of nursing; Dr. Bryan Phillips, associate professor
kinesiology; Dr. Dennis Province, associate professor of chemistry;
Dr. Richard Oster Jr., professor of New Testament; Dr. Gordon
Sutherlin, professor of education; and Dr. Rebecca Weaver, professor
of communication sciences and disorders, are the 2009 award winners.
Claxton joined the Department of English Language and Literature in
2003. He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Oglethorpe University,
and the Master of Arts and doctorate from University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. Claxton has earned numerous teaching awards during his
career and is co-sponsor of Harding’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, an
international English honor society.
Frazier has been a faculty member since 2001 in the College of
Business. He holds the Bachelor of Business Administration degree in
management from Harding University, the Masters of Business
Administration degree from University of Wisconsin, and the doctorate
from Capella University. In addition to his duties as associate
professor, Frazier is also chair of the Management Department.
Kelley joined the College of Nursing as an instructor in 1994. She was
later promoted to assistant professor. She holds the Bachelor of
Science in Nursing degree from Harding University and the Master of
Science in Nursing degree from University of Central Arkansas.
Phillips has been a faculty member at Harding since 1990. In addition
to teaching in the Department of Kinesiology, he coached the men’s and
women’s track team from 1990 to 2001 and both cross country teams from
1995 to 2001. He holds the Bachelor of Science degree in natural
science from Panhandle State University, the Master of Education
degree from Harding, and the doctorate from University of Arkansas.
Province joined the College of Sciences in 1999 and teaches chemistry.
He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Colorado at
Boulder and the doctorate from Oklahoma State University. He has
published articles in several scientific journals.
Oster came to Harding’s Graduate School of Bible and Religion in
Memphis in 1978. He holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech
University, the Master of Arts degree from Rice University, and the
doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary.
Sutherlin joined the College of Education in 1990. He holds the
Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Harding, the Master of
Education degree from University of Wisconsin at Superior, and the
Doctor of Education degree from University of Memphis. He has served
as director of teacher education at Harding and chair of secondary
education.
Weaver became a member of Harding’s faculty in 1984. In addition to
teaching, she serves as chair of the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders. She holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from
Harding, the Master of Communication Disorders degree from University
of Mississippi, and the doctorate from University of Memphis. She
currently serves on the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s
Legislative Council and the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association’s Speech-Language Advisory Council.
Each of the eight honorees received a $5,000 check and framed
certificate commemorating the award.
