First two candidates receive educational doctorate from Harding University

SEARCY, Ark. — Students Bruce W. Bryant and Lonnie E. Myers made
history by becoming the first candidates to receive the Doctor of
Education degree from Harding University Saturday.

Bryant, who serves as principal at Morrilton Junior High school in
Morrilton, Ark., successfully defended his dissertation titled
“Perceptions of Teachers to Mentoring and Induction in the State of
Arkansas” to earn the doctorate degree with an emphasis in educational
leadership. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in
vocational education from University of Arkansas and a Master of
Science in Education degree in secondary school leadership from
University of Central Arkansas. Dr. David Bangs, associate professor
of education, served as Bryant’s academic adviser at Harding.

Myers, who serves as assistant superintendant of Van Buren School
District in Van Buren, Ark., successfully defended his dissertation
titled “Principals’ Perceptions of Factors Affecting Teacher
Collaboration in Secondary Schools,” also earning the doctorate degree
with an emphasis in educational leadership. He holds a Bachelor of
Science in Secondary Education degree in physical education from John
Brown University. He holds a Master of Education degree in education
administration from University of Arkansas. Dr. Raymond “Donny” Lee,
associate dean and professor of education, served as Myers’ academic
adviser at Harding.

Bryant and Myers joined more than 350 graduates at commencement
exercises Saturday on campus in Benson Auditorium with Arkansas
Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Hannah as the featured speaker.
