Retired Harding University professor receives honorary degree
SEARCY, Ark.⎯Dr. Carl Mitchell, retired professor of Bible at HardingUniversity, received an honorary doctorate from Oklahoma Christian
University at its spring graduation exercises May 1.
The university honored Mitchell for his years of service in Italy and
at Pepperdine University and Harding.
Originally from Santa Paula, Calif., Mitchell graduated from
Pepperdine University where he spent 20 years as professor of
religion, department chairman and dean of student affairs. He holds a
doctorate degree from University of Southern California and is a
licensed marriage and family therapist.
Mitchell started teaching at Harding in 1980 and has also served as
dean of the College of Bible and Religion. He spent 17 years as a
missionary in Italy and was co-founder of Harding’s study abroad
program in Florence. In addition, he led the foundation of the
master’s program in marriage and family therapy.
Mitchell retired from teaching in 2008 but still serves as consultant
to the Institute for Church and Family at Harding.
