Harding University education teachers celebrate 10 years of mentoring

SEARCY, Ark. – Drs. Jan Morgan and Clara Carroll of Harding University
are celebrating 10 successful years of helping more than 5,000
Arkansas teachers and administrators through mentoring and training.

In 1999, the Arkansas Department of Education adopted Pathwise, a
model of classroom observation to evaluate the performance of student
teachers and first-year teachers. The program provides each teacher
with a trained Pathwise mentor who offers guidelines and advice to
help them pass the PRAXIS III exam, which is required to receive a
standard teaching license in Arkansas.

Pathwise is grounded in 19 essential teaching criteria, a foundation
supported by research and the consensus of hundreds of professional
educators across the country. Morgan and Carroll were among the first
Pathwise trainers in Arkansas. They teach the three-day training
session that all mentors must attend.

Since this program began, all teachers who have had a trained Pathwise
mentor and followed their guidelines have passed the PRAXIS III. The
mentors not only provide preparation for the test but also support and
encouragement for the teachers in their first years.

Harding had a record enrollment this year of more than 6,500 students
from 48 states and 52 foreign countries. It is the largest private
university in Arkansas and attracts more National Merit Scholars than
any other private university in the state. Harding also maintains
campuses in Australia, Chile, England, France/Switzerland, Greece,
Italy and Zambia.
