Harding dean receives Arkansas Gerontological Society award

SEARCY, Ark.⎯Dr. Cathleen Shultz, dean of the Harding University
College of Nursing, received the 2009 Arkansas Gerontological Society
Fellows Award on April 2. Vice President Kathie Gately presented the
award at the society’s annual aging conference at the C.A. Vines
Arkansas 4-H Center in Little Rock.

Each year, AGS presents three individuals with the Fellows Award for
outstanding contributions to the field of gerontology. The society,
founded in 1972, forms a statewide network to educate professionals
and the public about aging issues, develop resources, and address the
concerns of seniors.

Shultz, who came to Harding 33 years ago, became the dean of the
College of Nursing in 1980. She has played an active role in
developing the nursing gerontology program, working with professors
and students to incorporate the latest studies and techniques in elder
care into the curriculum. A major component is the Ombudsman Program,
which trains nursing students to become certified advocates for elders
in long-term living facilities – the first of its kind in the nation.

Shultz earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at University of South
Carolina. She later when on to receive her master’s degree in nursing
from Emory University and doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
