Alumnus named Young Dietitian of the Year

Mary Catherine Schallert of Memphis was selected as the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year by the Tennessee Dietetic Association at the organization’s annual meeting in March.

Schallert, a 2005 graduate of Harding University in Searcy, Ark., was among seven registered dietitians who were nominated for the award out of more than 1,300 dietitians in Tennessee. She has worked for Memphis VA Medical Center as a clinical dietitian since 2006 and is a primary member of the Nutrition Support Team.

In addition to her clinical duties at the medical center, Schallert is a preceptor for dietetic interns and enjoys mentoring future dietitians and teaching them about clinical practice. Since 2008, she has worked as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences at University of Memphis where she teaches medical nutrition therapy.

Schallert currently serves as president of the Memphis Area Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. She is also a member of the organization’s planning committee for Clinical Nutrition Week in 2001.
