Faculty and students attend state family and consumer sciences conference

The Arkansas Affiliate of the American Association of
Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference gathered March 3-4 in
the Brewer-Hegeman Center at University of Central Arkansas in Conway,
and several Harding University faculty and students were in
attendance. Becky Moore, Harding instructor of family and consumer
sciences, is the Arkansas affiliate chair and presided over the
conference.

Other Harding faculty who attended were assistant professors Rebecca
Teague, Dr. Crystal Whittington, and Dr. Denise Fisher.

Educational sessions at the conference included “Credit Card Smarts”
by Dr. Mary Ann Campbell, consultant for Index Credit Cards; “Dietary
Guidelines for Americans: Why Early Nutrition Education is Key to
Implementation” by Dr. Alice Lichtenstein, senior scientist and
director of the cardiovascular nutrition laboratory at Tufts
University; “Relationship Building” by Dr. James Marshall of
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service; and
“Preprofessional Assessments and Certifications: A Pathway to Success”
by Dr. Lori Myers of the American Association of Family and Consumer
Sciences. Attendees also received a guided tour at The Village at
Hendrix, a planned living community adjacent to Hendrix College in
Conway.

Harding University senior Malindi Jones of Olive Branch, Miss., served
as chair over the student section meeting. Junior Sarah Holup of
Tinley Park, Ill., was elected chair for the upcoming school year.
Sophomore Holly Imes of Jamestown, Ind., was selected chair-elect, and
junior Phillip Beach of Albuquerque, N.M., was elected second vice
chair.

Harding’s student chapter was recognized with the Standards of
Excellence Award. Students representing the group were senior Anna
(Moore) Calvert of Camp Point, Ill., junior Samantha Blackshear of
Callahan, Fla., and senior Kim Mitchell of Blossom, Texas.
