Students selected for Wal-Mart IT internship

On May 4, two Harding University students signed a letter of intent to intern next summer with Wal-Mart’s information technology department. Junior management information systems majors Simon Boyd Martin and Kelsi Thomas will begin their internship during summer 2013.

During the spring semester, Dr. Reet Cronk, associate professor of business, selected Martin and Thomas to attend an IT summit that Wal-Mart hosted for college students in MIS and related fields. While at the summit, the students attending were divided into multiple groups and given a scenario to approach and work together to solve. Martin and Thomas’ group produced what the judges thought was the best solution overall, both for solving the problem presented and ability to work together.

“I selected Kelsi and Simon because I thought they would represent the major and Harding well, both academically and character wise,” Cronk said. “I had them both in class this semester and it's been a pleasure getting to know them. They are both intellectually curious and have a good work ethic.”

Following the competition, Wal-Mart offered Martin and Thomas, along with each member of their group, a summer internship working in the organization’s IT department. On May 4, the students’ friends, family and fellow students and faculty gathered in the Mabee Business Building as they each signed a letter of intent.
