Music Majors - Other Instruments

Students in this category seek a B.A. or B.M.E. degree in music with another instrument besides piano as their principal instrument. The primary purpose of classes for these students is the development of fundamental keyboard skills necessary for the competent music educator; these skills are specified in the Piano Proficiency Exam and include technique, literature and musicianship. Successful completion of the Piano Proficiency Exam is required for graduation.

New students are assigned to piano courses based on the results of the Piano Placement Exam (administered before initial attendance of classes):

Lower Level - PIA 111 (Class Piano)

These students have had little or no pre-college preparation (less than four years). Based on the scores of the Placement Exam, students are assigned to one of two class sections, Beginners or Advanced Beginners, as a way of maximizing the learning environment.

Lower Level - PIA 101 (one-half hour lesson per week)

These students have had significant pre-college preparation on piano (four or more years) and need further development and refinement of skills and musicianship. They have demonstrated sufficient mastery of basic skills on the Piano Placement Exam to warrant their enrollment in private piano lessons.

* NOTE * All music majors must be continuously enrolled in piano until completion of the Piano Placement Exam.
