MUS 304 Piano Pedagogy and Repertory, offered every two to three years, provides a basic knowledge of the field of piano teaching. Many topics are covered, including the following:
- Teaching philosophies
- Learning styles
- Pedagogical techniques for average-age beginners
- Pedagogical techniques for older beginners and transfers
- Teaching methods and methods books
- Teaching group lessons
- Organizing and marketing an independent studio
- Observing lessons
- Using technology
- Developing one's self in the music profession
A number of reference sources are made available in the Brackett Library and in the Music Library. Students evaluate and discuss many teaching methods as well as websites related to the piano and piano pedagogy.
