The Power of Speech

As a nation, we have moved from an agricultural society to an industrial society and now to an information society. With all those transitions, you would think that the power of the spoken word would have more value in our world today. Such is not the case.

The writer of Proverbs says it clearly: The tongue has the power of life and death.. and reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

The genius of oral communication rests in the ability to be totally honest and totally kind at the same time. It means that being right does not guarantee acting right. It calls for a higher standard of civility in discourse. It may indeed be something that is reserved for saints and poets. May we all aspire to such a goal.
