Upon your decision to take part in Student Support Services, you will meet with an academic counselor concerning your specific needs.

The program provides you with:

Discussing your needs and goals with someone helps you better understand what they are. Student Support Services has counselors with experience in academic advising, goal setting, choosing a major and career planning. A licensed counselor is also available to help you with personal concerns, such as relationships, financial planning, personal resource management, etc.

We offer assistance and counseling for...

  • Personal Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Career Planning and Development
  • Learning Styles Determination
  • Study Skills Assessment
  • Academic Advising
  • Obtaining Financial Aid
  • Personal Counseling
  • Tutoring

Sometimes it helps to be able to lean on a peer for support through difficult classes. Upper-class students serve as peer tutors in this fully accredited tutorial program. Tutoring is free of charge to any student enrolled in the program.

To get where you want to be takes more than communication. Hands-on learning is an essential supplement to counseling.

Hands-on learning in study skills workshops will help you to enhance academic skills, such as note-taking, test-taking, study-reading and time management.

With Student Support Services, students will be able to attend various workshops, such as...

  • Orientation for new students
  • Financial Management
  • Financial Aid
  • Study Skills Enhancement
  • Test Anxiety
  • Praxis prep (math/reading/writing)
Easy Access/Disability Services

Access to the facilities is made easy for the physically impaired. Counseling, computers, test accommodations, and special software are readily accessible to students with disabilities on a limited basis. A Disabilities Services Coordinator will help students who need academic accommodations to arrange for special testing or other accommodations as needed.

To help complete the picture, we seek to accommodate students with physical and learning disabilities through these grant-allowable services. Other accommodations come through the university's disability office. For more information concerning disabilities, please contact Disability Services at 501-279-4019.

The Short Ropes Course

The course consists of activities on a special outdoor obstacle course.

Low Elements
Using various apparatus and equipment to pose problems for the group to overcome, leading to team-building and intentional problem-solving challenges.
Cultural Enrichment

The value of balance is conveyed to the students involved in Student Support Services, especially in the trips we take.

In previous years, we have been to...

  • Opera--"Madame Butterfly" in Memphis
  • Exhibits--"Catherine the Great" in Memphis
  • Musical Theater--"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" at Murray's Dinner Playhouse in Little Rock
  • Stage Production--"Wicked" in Little Rock
  • Stage Production--"The Aluminum Show" in Little Rock
  • Ozark Folk Festival in Mountain View, Arkansas

These trips are designed to enhance the student's exposure to the arts which, in turn, provides an integral resource for communication as well as inspiring self-worth through value-added experiences.

Peer Mentoring/CAPs

Let students who have already experienced freshman insecurity take you under their wing and help you through your first one or two semesters. These students, called "Coaches," in the "Coaches and Players" (CAPs) program meet regularly with you, the "Player," to answer your questions about anything from social clubs to time management to how to study for a test. Your Coach will help you formulate your "game plan" (study schedule) so you will score the most points (on tests and assignments) and win the College Game!
