Possible topic for Presentation

The following topics do not reflect the views of the instructor but are to incite you to passionately look at an assessment topic. Select a topic you feel strongly about (either side).

1. ACTAAP is a waste of time and resources.

2. Assessment should be individualized vs. There should be a set standard for all

3. Less standardized required testing should be done in the schools.

4. Local school boards should have the ultimate say in progress of students in their school.

5. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

6. Paper and pencil tests are more fair/consistent than alternative assessments

7. Schools should be penalized if their students do not score at a given level on a standardized test.

8. Special accommodation should be made for students who have disabilities or English as a second language.

9. Standardized test should measure higher order thinking skills.

10. Standardized tests determine the future of a student.

11. Students should be promoted to the next grade no matter the grades they obtain (social promotion).

12. Teacher pay raises should be based on the individual teacher’s students progress based on a standardized test.

13. Teachers should be tested to make sure they are competent.

14. Technology should used as a method of administering standardized tests.

15. There is grade inflation in the schools.

16. There should be no record of the students who received special accommodations on a standardized test.

The presentation will be from 30 to 45 minutes in length. All group members must present/participate in front of the class. You will have a handout that presents the views on both sides of the issue.
