The Harding University Testing Office administers several tests throughout the year. Below you will find a short summary of the different tests that are offered at our testing center. If you don't find the information here that you need there are links to several different websites available on our Links page. In addition feel free to contact our office for more information. Go to www.harding.edu/assessment for information on outcomes assessment and teacher evaluations.
Effective August 25, 2008 we will charge a $15 test administration fee (per exam) for each exam we proctor in our office, in addition to the cost of the exam.
MAJOR FIELD TEST
CLEP Exams:
These are exams that are offered to help students bypass some of the undergraduate courses. There are many tests to choose from and several opportunities to gain college credit. They can be taken while a student is in high school, college, or even the graduate level. For a more detailed list click here.
AP Exams:
Although these are offered only in high school Harding certainly accepts AP scores from schools across the country. Exams are taken at the end of the school after the student has completed the advanced placement course at their high school. Scores can be sent to Harding and college credit can be earned through this opportunity. For a more detailed list click here.
Praxis:
The Praxis Series consist of Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), speciality areas (Praxis II), Para Pro Assessment, and the School Leadership Series. Students interested in obtaining a teacher licensure will have to pass the Praxis in order to receive their certification. Harding offers the Praxis several times a year. You must register through Educational Testing Service. You can do this either online at www.ets.org/praxis. Our office can assist you through the registration process if necessary. If you are unsure of what tests you will need for y our specific are you can contact the College of Education office (501-279-4242) and they will advise you on which tests to take. ACT and SAT:
Students aspiring to go to college must take a college entrance exam such as the ACT or SAT. Harding offers both exams throughout the school year. A student must register through ACT or SAT directly. You can register online at www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.com/sat. In addition you could mail in a registration form which our office can provide if you do not have access to one. GRE:
The GRE is administered to those students desiring to enter a graduate program. At this time Harding does not offer the General exam. There are two types of testing: computer-based or paper-based. To register for either go to www.gre.org.We do administer the Subject exam once a year. Follow the same registration procedures as noted before.
MAT:
The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is a high-level, analytic ability test that requires the solution of problems stated as analogies. The MAT consists of 120 partial analogies that are to be completed in 60 minutes. The MAT is intended to measure your ability to recognize relationships between ideas, your fluency in the English language, and your general knowledge of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and social sciences. The MAT is offered at Harding University by appointment only. Call or come by the Testing Office and fill out a registration form and we can schedule an appointment anytime Monday-Friday. The MAT is usually program specific, so check to make sure it is accepted as an entrance exam for the program to which you are applying. English Proficiency Exam:
This exam is given to those students at Harding who have earned a "C" or lower in one or both Eng 111 and Eng 211. As a Harding University graduation requirement you must show that you are proficient in the English language. If you did earn a "C" or lower in the mentioned courses you can either take this exam or enroll in ENG 249. The EPE is offered twice a semester. It only takes 90 minutes and is free; whereas the actual course takes an entire semester and is not free. Only students who have between 60 and 105 hours can take this exam. If you fit in the category stated above you will receive a letter informing you of the next exam date. You have four chances to take it. You must bring a photo ID, notebook paper, and pen. You are encouraged to bring a dictionary and thesaurus. For a list of the upcoming test dates click here.
Note: This does not serve as an exemption out of either Eng 111 or 211. You must still take both courses.
TOEFL Exam:
"The Test of English as a Foreign Language™ (TOEFL®) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings. The TOEFL test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location. The TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success." For more information go to www.ets.org/TOEFL.
Online Courses or Independent Study for another institution:
We would be more than happy to proctor an exam from an online course or independent study you are enrolled in from another institution. We proctor these by appointment only Monday-Friday.
